SAHBA SALONS

Sahba Salons is a nomadic community and event series that brings together intrepid artists, scholars, scientists, and thinkers to celebrate and uplift the work of diverse and often under-represented creatives. Events are hosted approximately four times per year in Sahba's Palo Alto and Palm Springs studios and typically feature a talk by a featured artist, writer, performer, or thinker followed by an open conversation. Through the lively exchange of ideas and support, Sahba Salons strives to be a catalyst for passionate  individuals to realize their vision and inspire us all along the way.

SAHBA SALONS: UZRA ZEYA, COUNTERING THE AUTHORITARIAN WAVE, TOGETHER

Sunday, December 7 | 2–4 PM | Palo Alto Studio

All around us, we see worrying signs of attacks on democracy and authoritarians on the rise — from targeting of immigrant communities, to curbs on free speech, to militarization of our cities. But rather than succumb to defeatism or apathy, now is the time to stand together for human rights and defend the rule of law, accountable governance, and constitutional protections that underpin our way of life. Regardless of your politics, background, or zip code, human rights matter and require whole-of-society support and re-invention to ensure that our democracy prevails.

My friend Uzra Zeya spent decades in diplomacy countering the authoritarian playbook abroad that has come to our shores, including as the senior U.S. official responsible for human rights and refugee policy under President Biden. Now as the President and CEO of Human Rights First, she leads an organization renowned for driving human rights impact at home and abroad, through a combination of legal prowess, coalition leadership that unites unlikely allies, and tech innovation.

In anticipation of International Human Rights Day December 10, please save the date for a December 7 Sahba Salon with Uzra and friends from 2pm to 4pm at my Palo Alto studio. We'll discuss how we can defend democracy and counter the authoritarian wave together—and by choosing to build a bigger tent instead of a bunker.

Space is limited—please RSVP HERE.
